Cervical Screening Awareness Week

Posted on June 20th, 2025

Last week, NHS England announced changes to the cervical screening programme, moving screening intervals for those who haven’t had high-risk HPV found recently from three to five years for all eligible ages. This brings England in line with Scotland and Wales, who were already screening every five years. The Eve Appeal has conducted a study which reveals the anxiety surrounding the recent changes. ‘Over 40% of women in England are worried that being screened less often isn’t safe and around a third would be worried about getting cervical cancer if they were screened less often. Only around one in five (22%) trust that any decision to change screening intervals would be based on evidence.’

If you’re feeling confused or concerned about the changes to the cervical screening programme, please visit The Eve Appeal website, which has lots of information on the changes and the evidence behind them: https://eveappeal.org.uk/news/cervical-screening-interval/
