First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs)

Do you have bone, muscle or joint pain? In most cases, you do not need to see your GP with these kinds of problems so ask for an appointment with one of our First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) instead!

First Contact Physiotherapists are physiotherapists with expertise in the assessment and management of such musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions as:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Sprains or strains
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint or muscle pain

Their role in Primary Care is to assess patients with soft tissue, muscle and joint pain and to decide on the most appropriate management pathway.

A typical FCP appointment involves assessment, diagnosis and first-line management. They will assess you and diagnose what’s happening, give expert advice on how to manage your condition, recommend exercises and other approaches to deal with the issue and refer you on to specialist services if necessary. Indeed, FCPs can refer patients for a course of physiotherapy treatment, order investigations or make referrals into secondary care services using the same pathways as GPs.

So, if you are aged 16 and over and have bone, joint or muscle pain, an appointment with one of our First Contact Physiotherapists can provide you with quick access to expert MSK assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
